Malta is usually not love at first sight. It is to say that the love to Malta has the same rules than the love to Malta's most favorite softdrink (Kinnie). Either you like it - or you don't.

Malta, Gozo und Comino sind Inseln der Steine. Maltastein ist ein weiches Kalksediment, das sich in der Sonne strahlend gelb färbt. Wenn man am Landeanflug nach Malta ist, glaubt man fast, dass es keine Vegetation gibt sondern nur sehr viele dicht-gedrängte Häuser, einen Hafen, ein Stadion und ganz viele Hotel Pools die in der Sonne blitzen.

Warum hat aber Malta so viele Fans, auf der ganzen Welt? Es muss an der Mischung aus Tourismus, Kultur, Geschichte, Steinstrandflair, von dörflicher Ruhe bis zum hektischem Stadtleben und der Malteser liegen. Dies alles führt zu einer Melange die im Mittelmeer einzigartig ist.

Malta, Gozo and Comino are isles made of stone. Maltastone is a special kind of stone that recolors to yellow in the sun. The time you land in Malta you believe that there is hardly any vegetation, but only a lot of houses, a harbour, a stadium and a lot of hotels and pools.

Why does Malta has so many fans all over the world? It has to be the mix of tourism, culture, history, beaches, from silent villages to modern cities and the Maltesepeople and their kindness. That all leads to a mix that is unique in the Mediterranean Sea.

Die Geschichte Maltas gliedert sich in einige Zeitepochen.

Die history of Malta contains the following epoches.

• der römischen Zeit - time of the romans
• der Byzantinischen Zeit - time of the byzantines
• der Arabischen Zeit - the arabic times
• der Zeit der Normannen - time of the normannes
• der Spanischen Zeit - the spanish times
• der Johanniterzeit - time of the knight's of st. John
• der Zeit als britische Kolonie - time as a colonie of Britain
• der Unabhängigkeit und Republik - the independence and republic area

Jede dieser Zeitepochen war für Malta sehr prägend und man merkt der gesamten Insel dieses nahezu unglaubliche Kulturmix an. Das wichtigste Ereignis in der neuen Geschichte Maltas ist der Beitritt zur EU im Jahr 2004 (1. Mai) und die Tatsache, dass ab 1. Jänner 2008 der Euro eingeführt wird. Malta genießt innerhalb der EU eine Sonderstellung mit vielen Ausnahmen, die darauf beruhen, dass die Insel einfach sehr klein ist und deswegen geschützt gehört.

Each of those epoches was important for Malta and for the cultural mix. The most important events in recent history were the participation of the EU (1. Mai 2004) and the introduction of the euro on the 1. Jan. 2008. Malta has an expetional positions within the EU, due to it's small size.
